As an engineering graduate, what do you want to do? What
are your goals? Do you want to make your mark in the field of cutting edge
technology? Do you want to be an entrepreneur and script another Infosys? Do you want to be another forefront of
research? Do you want to contribute to nation building by grooming future
engineers? Do you want to land yourself a high paying job with a big MNC? Or do
you just want to be the current recession and the resulting joblessness?
Diverse goals and diverse expectations! But,
surprisingly, one common platform which can help you achieve them – an ME/MTech
degree. Let us see how it was and still is one of the best career options for a
graduate engineer.
Almost all global technological companies have shifted a
significant portion of their Research and Development (R&D) activities to
India. These research establishments recruit only Masters or Doctorate students
for these jobs. Further more GATE is pre requisite for eligibility for CSIR
labs in India for the junior research fellow program, after which you can
pursue your PhD in any good university
Just think – During an economic boom, most large IT
companies in India hire more than fifteen thousand graduates every year. How do
you stand apart? How do you make yourself seen?
While the IT industry is prominent sector driving the
employment boom, the job profiles and abilities required are primarily
generalist in nature. More often than not, there is no differentiation in the
job profiles being offered to the recruits based on their qualification. Be it
an Electrical engineer, Mechanical engineer or Computer science engineer. The
job description remains the same. Hence these jobs do not justice to the
knowledge picked up by a student during his/her under graduate studies. Master
students, however are offered core jobs which are undoubtedly much more
satisfying, intellectually as well as financially. And the value added, both to
the employer and employee, in a core job helps in making the employee
indispensable and insulating him/her from recession to a large extent.
Worldwide, a lot of technical companies trace their
origin and evolution to the research labs of universities. Companies like SUN
micro systems, Google, Yahoo, were conceived at various campuses. Back home in
India, companies like Strand Genomics evolved out of IISc campus. There are
other various examples where a number of IIT/IIScians have started their own
companies based on the technical foundation obtained at IIT/IISc. A large
percentage of software companies have been founded by IISc/IIT post graduates.
A list of IISC/IIT alumni who have made it big includes N R Narayana Murthy
(M.Tech from IIT Kanpur) and Sudha Murthy (M.Tech from IISc Bangalore), Mr
Ramadorai (former CEO of TCS, M.Tech from IISc Banaglore)
And tomorrow, you may be in this list…..who knows!!!
